Second Life Residents Embrace SurveysXpress Business Model

Residents of Second have overwhelmingly embraced the survey concept introduced by SurveysXpress. Second Life has its own currency, the Linden Dollar, and as a means of compensation each resident who qualifies and completes their SurveysXpress survey, are paid in Linden dollars. SurveysXpress is a business and consumer survey company that has become a true innovator in leveraging their real world experience and integrating within the virtual reality world of Second Life.

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) November 30, 2006 -- Residents of Second have overwhelmingly embraced the survey concept introduced by SurveysXpress.

Ms. Maryann (Szostak) Wolf, the creative leader of SurveysXpress, stated that "Second Life's resident population is growing at an explosive rate. Since August of this year the residents have more than tripled in population to approximately 1.7MM residents." Ms. Wolf also said "Many of the worlds Major Corporations have recognized the tremendous value in the Second Life community and are committing millions of their marketing dollars to secure their position within this exploding medium." SurveysXpress also recognized the incredible opportunity that is associated with the growth of business within Second Life. Opinions and comments are always an essential aspect of valued marketing decisions and SurveysXpress provides immediate feedback.

TouchTrak, a southern California software and technology developer working in conjunction with SurveysXpress produced a simple yet feature rich product. Clients can enjoy immediate access to survey tracking, activity reports, and can effect real time changes as required. TouchTrak's software is a powerful web-based engine that provides self-service capabilities as well as online administrative tools which make it easy and efficient for the client to manage their survey. SurveysXpress brings a truly professional product to the residents of Second Life and those clients who wish to know the residents opinions.

The Ricardo Group (Nevada Corporation) development team envisioned a business model that would explore the rapidly growing virtual reality world of Second Life. SurveysXpress was developed as that model. SurveysXpress continues to move forward within Second Life as a professional service provider and direct link for Real World businesses. SurveysXpress believes the Second Life world will continue to explode and present significant business opportunities for those who embrace the concept. As SurveysXpress evolves their vision will not be limited to the virtual world community, ultimately the technology will expand through out the Real World.

Post-update woes

In the wake of today's update to version 1.13.0 (8), we've had either the expected woes -- or more than the expected woes, depending on your perspective. The new friends-list functions seem to be working quite well, as are the chat and IM logging enhancements, but now -- some ten hours past the scheduled update window -- there are still issues.

  • Teleportation is an iffy proposition, depending on where you are, where you want to go and when you want to do it. It either works or it doesn't, and many are reporting spurious access denied messages for normally open destinations.

  • Linden Dollar balances display -- or don't. It's a bit of a mood thing, apparently, though it now seems to be working more often than it isn't.

  • Search - Search is up and down (as they say) 'like the Assyrian Empire'. Now it works, now it doesn't. If you're trying to get a name into an abuse report, you may be just plain out of luck for an hour or more.

  • Profiles are slow, slow, quick-quick, slow. Or just not appearing.

  • Some rezzed objects are not appearing for many minutes -- or over an hour in some cases.

  • Actually using the new friends functions may not work - no response for some time, or at all in some cases -- this appears to be linked to the same up and down cycle of search and profiles. Database clusters are obviously having a cow (or other indictable farm animal)

  • Sims falling in a heap and not restarting themselves. An overworked gridmonkey is apparently dealing with them as swiftly as possible -- Send more bananas.
So, tell me. Is this as bad as you expected for this release? Better? Or worse?

The Scumfrog opens a virtual reality club in “Second Life”

On December 13th 2006, The Scumfrog will make a big splash in the online game/community Second Life. His contribution to this virtual world comes in the way of a 24 hour party island called Skyros

Skyros - named after the Greek island where The Scumfrog spent his childhood summer’s and started his DJ career 18 years ago – is being developed by Loudbaby.com to become a new haven for fans of Electronic Dance Music. The virtual playground will be a combination of a game, a chat room, a vehicle for streaming DJ sets and a networking site. The pride of Skyros will be the otherworldly club “Glam Scum.” Set to open in February 2007, this club is rumored to raise the bar for the new phenomenon of online clubbing through its design and audio/visual programming.

The December 13th event – celebrating the release of The Scumfrog’s new Mix CD Mega Scum 01 - is set to start at 9pm EST and will take place in Balearic flavored tents on the island. The Scumfrog will be playing live sets alongside his friends D:Fuse, Static Revenger, DJ Rap, and Richard Vission. All DJs will be present in avatar form during the event to meet, greet, and socialize.

All that’s needed to join Second Life and get to Skyros is to download the software from www.secondlife.com and register as a citizen. There is a SLURL (Second Life URL) on www.thescumfrog.com that automatically launches the software and drops your newly created persona straight into The Scumfrog’s welcome center on the Second Life main land. At the welcome center, all visitors receive a goodie bag with a Scumfrog T-shirt for their avatar, as well as a beginners manual on how to move about in the new world. Once you feel you’re comfortable enough to party, you transport yourself to Skyros…to never log off again.

Check out www.thescumfrog.com for more information, continued updates, and a free download of The Scumfrog’s upcoming single “Chicks 4 Free.”

WOOOWWW: Doing business in Second Life

Anshe Chung's million-dollar profit in real-estate sales over 30 months wouldn't be all that impressive, really, were it not for one thing: The land she sells is made entirely of pixels.

Chung is one of some 1.7 million denizens of Second Life, a virtual 3D world that, frankly, reminds me a bit too much of "The Matrix" for my liking.

But Chung clearly has enjoyed success there -- and not just socially: After plunking down 10 bucks for membership three and a half years ago, she started an aggressive campaign of buying, dividing, and selling Second Life property (which is quite visually impressive). Her holdings, which include not only land but virtual malls, chains, and store brands, are now worth "several million Linden dollars" (the currency of Second Life), which she asserts is convertible into at least one million dollars, American. She claims that makes her the virtual world's first millionaire.

Her operations have since grown to include the development and sale of properties for large scale real world corporations, and have led to a real life "spin off" corporation called Anshe Chung Studios, which develops immersive 3D environments for applications ranging from education to business conferencing and product prototyping.

Now, this isn't the first instance of individuals reaping real monetary success from a virtual world. I remember back in the day of text-based RPGs such as Gemstone III, players were willing to fork over real-world cash for powerful weapons. That trend has continued with graphical RPGs such as Everquest and World of Warcraft.

But Second Life clearly has opened up a whole new world of financial opportunity, and it's not just entrepreneurial types like Chung who are taking note. As reported by InfoWorld Lead Analyst Jon Udell, companies like Sun have attempted to leverage the success of the virtual universe -- though with arguably limited success. (Media companies also have staked ground there.) Udell attended a "block party" IBM held there and found the experience to be less than satisfying: The venue seemed to detract from the experience more than enhance it.

And at least back in October, Udell's prediction for Second Life serving as the next big business platform was not particularly optimistic: "[If] history repeats itself, we'll find that fancy 3-D designs will ultimately prove no more compelling than fancy Web pages."

Virginia Hines, InfoWorld's VP and General Manager of InfoWorld.com, dipped her foot into the virtual waters of Second Life recently to investigate its b-to-b potential, as well as its applicability to a future version of InfoWorld IT Exec-Connect. Though she was impressed by the system's underlying technologies, deeming Second Life "a fascinating experiment and laboratory for all the social sciences," she came away with some healthy skepticism about the medium's business potential.

Among other things, she noted that it's not sufficiently usable and navigable to attract and retain new users. Moreover, the current residents of the world are more focused on playing than working, which means that "any effort to use Second Life for B2B marketing purposes will probably require enticing a new demographic into the community, as opposed to attracting current members."

Finally, she said that "many of the current corporate ventures in Second Life are hard to locate, fail to attract traffic, and offer little user value. Without a more grounded value proposition, the concept of being in Second Life just to 'establish a presence' doesn't seem very fruitful."

Have you had any experience in Second Life? Do you think there's potential here for some serious business opportunities?

AWESOME: NBC Universal in Second Life :-)

Tonight at 8:55pm EST (5:55pm SLT) NBC Universal will be hosting a virtual Christmas Tree Lighting in Second Life to go hand-in-hand with the lighting of the RL tree in Rockefeller Center. You can attend the event by arriving arriving at any of the 19 sims with the NBC name (NBC 1-19.)

The NBC Universal Headquarters build where the event will be hosted was a collaborative effort between Aimee Weber Studio as the in-world lead (this blogger's company) and the famed Bedazzle Studio. Visitors will be treated with Christmas presents under each tree (a total of nine) and a free pair of ice skates by Moopf which visitors can use to show their stuff on the virtual ice skating rink The sim also includes a lovely coffee shop and elevator rides to the posh Peacock Room high atop the central building. Electric Sheep will be handling streaming services including live musical entertainment and a simulcast on the NBC website.

NBC to Make Virtual Debut in Second Life Tonight!

Will Amy Weber cross over into mainstream celebrity when NBC makes its virtual debut on Second Life tonight?

The powerhouse creative force Aimee Weber, designer of the popular *PREEN* clothing line and project manager for the creation of NBC's virtual presence in SL, sat with SMF in her Midnight City skybox, her "secret lair," to talk about the groundbreaking project.

The festivities will kick off at 8 pm on Wednesday, November 29 in Second Life, when the virtual tree in front of the virtual building inspired by 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan will be triumphantly lit to cap off NBC's opening of roughly 20 sims to the public, joining Reuters, the Huffington Post and other major media in SL. This is a significant event, and not just because free ice skates will be available and free gifts will be under the tree.

Weber, who collaborated with Electric Sheep and Bedazzle on the project, gazed through silver shades at the starlit SL rain as we chatted on the eve of her major accomplishment. Her Blue Morpho butterfly wings opened and closed.

"I'm tired," she said, "and I can't really rest."

When asked what the user-created virtual world SL means for artists and society, Weber was ebullient. The idea that many of society's most creative members should scratch out a living at mind-numbing work is well entrenched in real life, but in Second Life, that condition has been removed, and the only inherent limitation on an "avatar" is the ability to make things happen.

"I think a whole new medium is opening up for artists," Weber said. "A whole new market. So I think you will see this stuff get huge."

When we finished with the interview she told me to walk off the edge of the skybox and fall until I hit the Midnight City streets below. As my body fell through the sky, stars streaked the darkness and the sensation was palpable in my stomach. I fell to the pavement with a thud to find cabs and graffiti and urban windows lit from within slate gray buildings. I wandered to a lonely street and as I drifted under a streetlamp wondered if anyone was watching me from the hidden recesses of this virtual world. You can freefall through space and land safely only to find yourself worrying about a virtual violator. I looked around for a pose ball scripted for kickboxing as I ambled to a dark, deserted bridge. Like Dorothy clicking her ruby slippers, I teleported myself instantly back to the safety of Knysna.

SMF would like to take this opportunity to forge a virtual bond with NBC by inviting Keith Olbermann to my Knysna beach hut for an interview about the implications of major media in SL (and he's got plenty to say about RL, too!) I can hardly wait to see what his avatar will look like.

First Reuters Newsmaker Interview

Reggie and Adam
The last fifteen minutes prior to the arrival of Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo America, is littered with chatter -- talk about cellphones, interference from Blackberries, and generally all the usual teething problems that you'd expect of any voice-based interview in SL. Reggie's avatar is sitting there, logged in, but Reggie himself has not yet arrived. The audience has been chatty and calm, many of whom had been camped out for more than an hour to ensure their seat at the event.

Then the stream beeps and goes quiet, as he enters, presumably to not bore us with the necessary technical talk and social lubricant as everyone gets ready. Very quickly, at only 2 minutes past the hour (a mere four minutes after Reggie arrives) he and Adam are sitting and talking smoothly.

Adam is perceptive -- he's asking the sorts of questions people seem to be interested in hearing the answers to. Reggie is pretty smooth, answering easily and comfortable with his material. Reggie would like us not to all hack into our Wiimotes for Second Life though :)

Reggie believes that the Wii is quite capable (from a sheer performance perspective) of handling MMOs, and that the Wiimote would be well adaptable to the three dimensional spaces of MMOs. No first-party development of MMOs is planned, but some third-party MMO pre-development may be in the works.

After a couple questions from the audience, Adam and Reggie wrapped things up quite smoothly, and departed. At the end a number of insults began to fly among the audience, but only after the principals of the event had been gone for a minute or two.

All in all a smooth and undisrupted event handled very professionally, and the next one will likely go even more smoothly, during the setup phase, given the quick, seat-of-the-pants experience gained today.

Toy LaFollette returns to Second Life

Filed under:

Toy LaFollette with Teeny LeviathanToy LaFollette, one of Second Life's most well-known Live Helpers has returned to Second Life. Toy (born Feb 2004) was particularly known for her cheerful disposition, compendious knowledge of all things SL, and her diligence and long hours in Live Help. She disappeared from Second Life suddenly on the 13th of May (2006), when RL concerns and circumstances forced her sudden and unannounced absence. Her friends feared the worst.

During her absence, her account lapsed, her objects vanished from the world, her friends worried, but her island - which had been paid in advance some time ago - remained, littered by the prims of itinerant experimenters, and with only perhaps a third of the build remaining. To stand there, as I did last week, was like looking at Chuck Jones' interpretation of purgatory, stark, fragmented, sad, lonely and alien.

Two days ago, Toy returned - as Najmah Handayani, as she was unable to access her regular account. Some communications with Customer Service, and she will be able to return as Toy LaFollette once the matter of some considerable sum in back-tier payments is resolved.

That grabbed your attention, didn't it? Unfortunately, it's not mine -- the title belongs to the blog of Eureka Dejavu, who writes about just those things in her ongoing investigation into the sociological issues of SL. Eureka is the nom de virtual of Rita J. King, an investigative photojournalist who has written for such publications as the New York Times and the Village Voice.

In a recent article written for the Huffington Post, Eureka interviews an avatar concerning definitions of fidelity and what's considered 'okay' sexually, when one has a RL marriage. I'm looking forward to reading more by Eureka, and welcome your comments on these issues as well!

Anshe Chung: Millionaire

The Second Life Herald reports that love-her-or-hate-her icon Anshe Chung is poised to announce that she has made a million dollars in SL since her business's inception roughly two and a half years ago.

Perhaps Saturday's announcement will make clear whether or not her current bank balance is actually at a million dollars or (more likely) that it's an aggregated total over the two and a half years. [SNARK ALERT] Wow, this is a huge relief for me; Anshe is finally big enough for me to interview for SLI.

At this point, is it even possible for anyone to unseat her as reigning queen of virtual estate? Has she just gotten too big to take on? Is it even perceived as necessary? Drop your comments!

Last chance to get Moopf's Steamer Icicles

Filed under:

As it is Saturday, this is your last chance to get these amazing Steamer Icicles, the Steampunk ice skates made by Moopf Murray as part of his limited edition season. Sometime after midday today, the vendors will be updated with the next in the range of skates, and the Steamers will be gone.

I love all the skates Moopf has made -- I've seen the next ones and I love them too -- but the Steamers are fantastic. They're shown here with shiny turned on, as I forgot to do that with the previous picture. Get some while you still can.

For those who haven't read my previous pieces, Moopf is selling special editions of his famous ice skates, a different version each week. In order to be able to buy a special pair at the end of the eight weeks, you have to have purchased six of the eight special pairs. The new skates will be available soon, from the vendors all over SL, including Nemesis. I have been wearing mine more or less continuously, skating around SL. I've only been asked once or twice why my trousers are on fire....

Teacher makes a million in Second Life

Teacher makes a million in Second Life

A Chinese teacher has become the first real-life millionaire to make her fortune from virtual business in an online world, a report says.

Ailin Graef, known to residents of online community Second Life as Anshe Chung, turned her original investment of $9.95 in virtual real estate into more than $1 million, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Tuesday.

Graef, who spun her online business into a Wuhan, China, based real-world enterprise called Anshe Chung Studios, made her fortune buying and selling plots of virtual land -- comprised of 3D simulations hosted on 550 networked computers -- that participants in the virtual environment shell out between $100 and $1,000 to own.

Much like real-world property developers, Graef uses her Anshe Chung avatar to buy large blocks of virtual land and then improves and subdivides the plots that she then resells or rents.
